The FWEE Hydropower & STEM Career Academy helps you explore what your future could look like—by connecting what you learn in the classroom to real careers in your community.
During this immersive, week-long academy, you’ll dive into the world of hydropower, engineering, and renewable energy through hands-on experiences alongside industry professionals. You won’t just learn about careers—you’ll try them out.
Throughout the week, you will:
- Explore careers in hydropower and renewable energy
- Learn directly from engineers, plant operators, lineworkers, GIS analysts, and other industry professionals
- Go behind the scenes at two Columbia River hydropower projects
- Assemble and test your own hydroelectric models
- Race a solar car
- Build and fly your own drone
- Solve a real-world project management challenge
- Climb a power pole alongside experienced lineworkers
- Develop a professional network with mentors working in the energy industry
As the week unfolds, you’ll explore multiple career pathways—including four-year college degrees, community college programs, certifications, and apprenticeships. College advisors and mentors will be on hand to help you understand prerequisites, academic preparation, and the steps needed to pursue these careers—many of which are available right here in our region.
The academy is led by passionate industry and education professionals from across the Northwest who believe in “paying it forward.” Each instructor brings their own story—often with twists and turns—about finding a career they love. Could their story be yours?
The Hydropower & STEM Career Academy is made possible through the generous support of our sponsors, including the Foundation for Water and Energy Education (FWEE), Microsoft, Douglas PUD, Grant PUD, and the Chelan County PUD who host the event at the Rocky Reach Discovery Center. Thanks to this support, registration is $175 per student, with scholarships available.
