Long Lake was the highest dam in the world when completed in 1916.
This site was ideal for a hydro project because the river makes a complete horseshoe bend and passes through a box canyon.
It took 500 workers to build this project. An entire city was established at the project site, complete with all the amenities found in an early 1900s town.
The project created a 24-mile lake and reservoir called Long Lake or, in recent years, Lake Spokane.
Ongoing fish, wildlife and botanical programs reflect Avista's commitment to the Spokane River area. The company has donated more than 500 acres of land to Riverside State Park and manages 2,500 acres around Long Lake for wildlife and recreation benefits.
