Gorge Dam is located on the Skagit River. It is the historic anchor of Seattle City Light's Skagit Hydroelectric Project. It was first built as a crib dam - timber and rock - and the associated powerhouse began generating power in 1924. A concrete gravity-arch dam was built in 1950 and expanded in 1960 to its current size - 300 feet high and 670 feet wide.
The dam's 4.5-mile-long reservoir has a boat launch, but it is suitable only for small craft.
Newhalem, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the few company towns in the country and the only one owned by a city. Among the amenities for visitors: the Skagit General Store, Skagit Information Center, Skagit Tours, walking trails, picnic areas, rest rooms and expansive lawns.
