Cedar Falls Hydroelectric Project,
owned by Seattle City Light

Cedar Falls was the first municipally owned hydroelectric project in the United States, going online January 10, 1905. The dam and powerhouse are located on the Cedar River within the City of Seattle's watershed. When the masonry dam was built in 1913, it was the largest single structure, by volume, constructed in the world since the Egyptian pyramids and has been designated a National Historical Civil Engineering Landmark. The plant's capacity is 30 MW, which serves about two percent of Seattle's electrical needs. The Cedar Falls hydro project is also used to manipulate river flow to assist fish migration and flood control.
The Cedar River Watershed Education Center, managed by Seattle Public Utilities, is just downstream from the Cedar Falls Powerhouse. Prearranged guided tours are available through Seattle Public Utilities and Seattle City Light. Rattlesnake Lake Park, two miles farther downstream has picnic, fishing and swimming opportunities.
