Cabinet Gorge, built in 1952, is located in northern Idaho and Western Montana on the Clark Fork River. Its construction was prompted by a critical shortage that affected Northwest industries and residential customers in the late 1940s and 1950s. Energy from Cabinet Gorge was desperately needed.
Cabinet Gorge was built in an unprecedented 21 months -- a major accomplishment for Avista. Crews worked 24 hours a day to meet construction deadlines.
Upon completion, the Cabinet Gorge project more than doubled Avista's generating capacity and again established the company as a self-sufficient energy provider.
Avista, in cooperation with federal and state agencies, developed a Kokanee Salmon hatchery downstream of the Cabinet Gorge project on the Clark Fork River.
