Andy Dunau opened the meeting by reading e-mail messages sent to FWEE over the past month from writers in the United States as well as other countries, including Norway, Indonesia, the Phillippines and New Zealand. Also, members reviewed summary reports of the FWEE Web site during the months of June and July. It was reported that the FWEE Web site received 22,980 hits during the month of June and 25,074 hits in July.
The group commented positively on the work Alison Squier had done in the Web site summaries. Wayne Wright commented that the news and hydro info needs to be updated more often. Andy encouraged members to visit the Web site often and send comments to Alison.
Andy discussed the status of the relocation of the official FWEE home address from Salem, Oregon to Spokane, Washington. It is approximately 95% completed. Wayne gave a brief history of FWEE to explain why the relocation was necessary.
Randy Stearnes distributed newsletters with hydro articles and Wayne discussed kayaking issues that Chelan County P.U.D. encountered as a result of their relicensing process.
Rae Olsen was introduced to the group and she gave a brief overview of PPL Montana.
She also inquired about the types of services that FWEE could offer PPL Montana to help reach students and teachers in her area.
Marty and Eileen reported on Pend Oreille P.U.D. happenings while Christine gave an update on her consulting work.
Randy reported on FWEE involvement with the HydroVision conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, August 7-11, and also a teacher workshop at Northwest Trek in Eatonville, Washington. Christine reported that she and Randy Stearnes will attend the Public Awareness of Hydropower workshop in Seattle, September 19-20 sponsored by the executive committee of the Hydropower Agreement (Implementing Agreement on Hydropower Technologies and Programs). Reminders were given about the upcoming Utility Educators meeting at Snohomish County P.U.D. (Everett, Washington) on Friday, September 22 as well as the WaterPower conference in Salt Lake City (July 9-11, 2001).
The next HydroVision conference will be held in Portland, Oregon during August 2002.
Wayne reported on the "FWEE Splash" advertising campaign to promote FWEE and the FWEE Web site. Wayne explained that the target audience was the voting, decision-making business people. Since the same owner operates the business newspapers in Portland, Seattle and the Eastside (Bellevue) a small ad could be placed in each newspaper for a total of $7,500. The question was raised if this ad could be placed in smaller newspapers in the FWEE membership area. Also, how long would the advertising run?
Also considered was the idea that the FWEE Splash could work in concert with Christine Stallards visits to political/government contacts.
Alison announced that it was time for a reprint of "Following Natures Current" so members were encouraged to review the publication and mark needed revisions.
The handcrank generator display was discussed. Rae asked about PPL Montana using one. Andy needs an order of three to make it economically feasible to start construction.
Christine distributed a proposal on how to promote FWEE to policymakers. The group reviewed the plan and asked if any members (those present and those not present) might have issues that should not be included in Christines presentations. Andy discussed the idea of including customized statistics.
The group discussed a kids page for the Web site and reviewed some suggested questions for a quiz page.
Next meeting: Thursday, October 26 at a Seattle location to be announced
